Help for Dyslexic learners


 

 

It is important for dyslexic learners to engage in frequent over learning activities which follow a structure. 

Activities should be short, varied and multi-sensory. 

Care should be taken to ensure that instructions are clear and accessible and that independent tasks are achievable. 

The resources and activities below have been developed with this in mind to help provide dyslexic learners with suitable home learning.

Phonics Overlearning

Phonological Awareness 

It is important for all learners to develop this, but perhaps of particular concern are the learners in the early stages who are still developing these essential phonological awareness skills.  Information for teachers and ideas for developing phonological awareness are available on the blog

Reading 

Dyslexic learners might still be in the early stages of reading and struggle to do it independently. It is important that they are still provided with the opportunity to enjoy the written word. An ideal situation is where they are regularly listening to stories being read to them by someone else. Alternatively, they can enjoy listening to a story through talking books and websites where each story is being read.  There are examples of these on the website.

It is still important for dyslexic learners to continue to practise reading independently.  Bear in mind the five finger rule.

This is an opportunity for dyslexic learners to consolidate spelling rules that were taught earlier this session.

Books for All – free downloadable Electronic books are available for dyslexic learners to use text-to-speech on ipad or laptop to listen to a novel.
