ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING /

Assessment practice will follow and reinforce the curriculum and promote high quality learning and teaching approaches.  Assessment of children’s and young people’s progress and achievement during their broad general education will be based on teachers’ assessment of their knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and capabilities, as described in the experiences and outcomes across the curriculum.

The standards and expectations that form our aspirations for all learners are set out for the whole curriculum in the experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence.  Reflecting the principles of Curriculum for Excellence, progress is defined in terms of ‘how well’ and ‘how much’, as well as learners’ rates of progress.

This approach will promote greater breadth and depth of learning, including a greater focus on achieving skills and knowledge.  Assessing progress across a breadth of learning, in challenging aspects and when applying learning in different and unfamiliar contexts, will also help teachers and senior managers to plan, track progress, summarise achievements in a rounded way and better prepare children and young people for the next stage in learning.

Parents will get regular information about their children’s strengths, progress and achievements.  This will include brief descriptions of progress across the curriculum areas and through the curriculum levels as well as progress towards qualifications in the senior phase.

All young people are entitled to support which helps them to understand their progress and achievements and it is important that they can discuss their learning and achievements openly on a regular basis. By S3 all young people are required to have a profile which is a statement of their latest and best achievements. By completing learning journeys and P7 profiles in our school we allow our children to gain insight into the skills they are developing.

All our children have a Learning Journey.  These allow children to:

· think about what they are good at.

· identify how they can improve.

· set learning targets to improve learning in class.

· set learning targets for personal and social  development.

In School

· Teachers meet with parents/carers and pupils to talk about their progress made and to set personal targets for Language, Maths and Health and Wellbeing.

· The Learning Journeys are developed throughout the year in school.  They allow children, their families and the school to explore the learning that takes place.  The Learning Journeys will give a  picture of what children are learning in school and their next steps for development.

At Home

· The Learning Journey comes home each term. At the start of each  session, children complete the ‘All About Me’ pages at home.

· Children can record any achievements outwith school, for example  certificates, photos with medals/trophies

or any other photos of interest.  These are inserted in the Wider Achievements section.

Every child leaving primary school in Scotland has their key achievements in school, at home and in the community documented within a P7 profile.  The content of the profile is decided by the young person.  The profile is a positive record of their achievements and emphasis their strengths.  The profile provides a valuable way for learners to share valuable information about their achievements with their parents and teachers in secondary school.

In addition each child receives an annual individual progress report. This report outlines

· How well learners are achieving;

· The performance of the children in relation to expected levels at particular stages in key areas such as literacy and numeracy;

· Pupil’s  comment on their learning;

Parents who wish to discuss their child’s report or general progress with the class teacher outwith these times, should contact the school to arrange a mutually convenient time for the meeting.
